Worthington shuffles lineup, falls to St. James 5-2

ST. JAMES -- The St. James Saints swept through the singles matches and won 1-of-3 doubles matches to earn a 5-2 non-conference boys tennis victory against the Worthington Monday afternoon.

ST. JAMES -- The St. James Saints swept through the singles matches and won 1-of-3 doubles matches to earn a 5-2 non-conference boys tennis victory against the Worthington Monday afternoon.

The Saints' Josh Doll opened the match with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-0 win over Worthington's John Shepherd at No. 1 singles.

Teammate David Swanson followed suit, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Trojans' Nezir Barden at No. 2 singles, while the Saints' Ryan Doll knocked off Worthington's David Sorenson, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Charlie Kolstad then completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Worthington's Alex Myrom at No. 4 singles.

The Worthington duo of Tim Roos and Adam Vosburgh won the first set of their No. 1 doubles match against Peter Johnson and Kalebe Sturm, but the Saints' tandem bounced back to beat the Trojan pair, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The Trojans saved face however, winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

Danny Penaredondo and Alex Stewart (No. 2 doubles) gave the Trojans their first victory, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, with a comeback in the final two sets against Brett Mnella and Scott Mueller. Taylor Weiner and Mitchell Benson followed for the Trojans, beating James Rogers and Matt Tucholke in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles.

In exhibition singles play, Worthington's Kyle Hain fell, 3-5, 3-5, and Yannick Elers was knocked off, 1-6, 2-6.

In exhibition doubles play, Alex Ling and Anthony Kellen dropped a three-set match, 1-5, 5-2, 7-1, while Dan Wetering and Lance Homan fell, 0-5, 2-5.
