Worthington Sr. Legion edged by Sleepy Eye

SLEEPY EYE -- The Worthington Senior American Legion baseball team surrendered a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday night, losing its season opener 4-3 to host Sleepy Eye.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Worthington took a 1-0 lead. The locals added another run in the sixth and a third in the seventh. Sleepy Eye scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth before plating the game-winner in the next inning.

Michael Iverson pitched five and two-thirds innings for Worthington, dominating his rivals through the first five. But the heat, humidity and pitch count became a factor in the sixth.

Danny Pavelko finished up for the locals.

Eli Gaul was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Worthington. Kent Lais was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Iverson was 2-for-3. Nathan Van Orman doubled and drove in a run.
