Wrestling: Generals qualify eight for state

OKOBOJI, Iowa -- Eight Sibley-Ocheyedan wrestlers qualified for the traditional Iowa state wrestling tournament as the Generals placed first at the Class 1A, District 4 tournament on Saturday in Okoboji.

OKOBOJI, Iowa -- Eight Sibley-Ocheyedan wrestlers qualified for the traditional Iowa state wrestling tournament as the Generals placed first at the Class 1A, District 4 tournament on Saturday in Okoboji.

S-O scored 130 points in its first place finish, well ahead second-place Akron-Westfield’s 88 points. Four Generals wrestlers won their weight classes, while four finished second, to qualify for state.

Dylan Schuck placed first at 145 pounds, with two pins, each in under a minute. He pinned Emmetsburg’s Mason Griffin in 0:34 in the semifinal, and Akron-Westfield’s AJ Nemesio in 0:54.

Trent Kruger (170 pounds) placed first, also with two pins. He pinned Graettinger-Terril/R-A’s Beau Schany in 1:10 in the semifinal, and Akron-Westfield’s Daniel Martinsen in 2:45 in the final.

Hunter Dejong (195 pounds) matched Scuck and Kruger and won his weight class with two pins. He pinned Emmetsburg’s Jimmie Steffens in 0:59 in the semifinal, and Alta/Aurelia’s Nick Gaes in 0:27 in the final.

Matt Naig (heavyweight) placed first with a pin in the semifinal and a 6-0 decision over Akron-Westfield’s Montana Jackson in the final.

Jose Flores (106 pounds), Trey Schuck (120 pounds), Garrett Sayler (160 pounds), and Erick Olvera (220 pounds) all placed second. Zak Stanton (126 pounds) placed fourth.

With eight-of-nine wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament, the Generals positioned themselves well for a high finish, after taking 11th last year.

The IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament opens on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, and runs through Saturday.

CL/G-LR places fourth, S-SO 10th at district tourney SPENCER, Iowa -- Four wrestlers finished in the top-2 for Central Lyon/George Little Rock as it placed fourth at the Class 2A, District 7 tournament on Saturday, scoring 73 points. Sheldon-South O’Brien scored 27 points, with two wrestlers competing. Spirit Lake Park won the tournament with 104 points.

Austin Winkel (195 pounds) placed first for CL/G-LR, winning by 3-2 decision over Bishop Heelan Catholic’s Diego Samaniego in the semifinal, and 4-1 decision over Sioux Center’s Caleb Kempema in the final.

Seth Deatsch (120 pounds), Gable Sieperda (132 pounds), and Mitch Van Beek (138 pounds) finished second. Caleb Kramer (145 pounds) and Kolten Bus (182 pounds) placed third. Bryce Vande Weerd (160 pounds) and Bryce Bickerstaff (170 pounds) placed fourth.

S-SO’s Luke Jenness placed first at 182 pounds, with a 0:33 fall over Bishop Heelan Catholic’s Jesse Lease in the semifinal, and 12-0 major decision over Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Kyle Benson in the final.
