Trojans, Cardinals post solid results in Big South Conference cross country

PIPESTONE -- Worthington's Fanuel Wolday won the boys varsity race, and Luverne's Tenley Nelson was second in the girls race in Pipestone Tuesday in the Big South Conference cross country meet as the WHS boys placed first in team competition and the LHS girls tied for first with Marshall.

PIPESTONE -- Worthington 's Fanuel Wolday won the boys varsity race, and Luverne 's Tenley Nelson was second in the girls race in Pipestone Tuesday in the Big South Conference cross country meet as the WHS boys placed first in team competition and the LHS girls tied for first with Marshall.

Wolday toured the course in 16:29.29, out-pacing second place Will Ahrens of Redwood Valley, who finished in 16:36.58. Ryan Pierson of St. James Area was third (16:40.81) and Andrew Boyum of Jackson County Central was fourth (16:45.28). Marco Crispin (16:45.72) of St. James Area was fifth, and Luverne 's Camden Janiszeski (16:52.75) and Owen Janiszeski (17:00.86) were sixth and seventh. Worthington 's Mikele Walu was eighth in 17:02.38.

Trojans Ofbeka Morke (10th, 17:05.36), Alec Langerud (12th, 17:13.81), Filmon Wolday (15th, 17:18.18) and Mason Bobb (21st, 17:33.96) also finished among the leaders.

On the girls' side, Fairmont's Laura Thompson was the overall winner by coming in at 18:12.24, but Nelson was close behind with a clocking of 18:13.01. Macy Hanson of Fairmont was third in 18:27.50, followed by Windom Area's Kaylee Walklin (18:35.21), Marshall's Allyson Sample (18:53.67), Waseca's Ella Dufault (19:02.52) and Luverne 's Jenna DeBates (19:10.15) to round out the top seven. Marshall held down spots 8, 9 and 10 with Ballamy Sukalski, Miracle Tucker and Katelyn Leibfried.

Worthington's top five girl finishers were, in order, Emily Dahlquist, Nicole Wede, Kenadie Thiner, Marissa Thier and Jenna Hoffman.

The Luverne and Marshall girls each finished with 51 team points. Fairmont was next with 102, followed by Redwood Valley 107, Waseca 113, Pipestone Area 165, St. James Area 205, Jackson County Central 208, Windom Area 229, Worthington 260 and Blue Earth Area 283.

Worthington was first in the boys team standings with 46 points, followed by Luverne with 91, St. James Area 93, Marshall 110, Redwood Valley 131, Windom Area 138, Jackson County Central 150, Fairmont 193, Waseca 224, Pipestone Area 237, St. Peter 321 and Blue Earth Area 369.
