Action finally got under way on Thursday for Section 3A and Section 3AA softball. Both top seeds, Edgerton/Southwest Christian in 3A and Pipestone Area in 3AA, advanced with ease. The next round in the respective tournaments are Saturday.
The Globe MANKATO -- Worthington won a game and lost a game. But in the end, the Trojans are still alive in the Section 2AAA softball tournament. Fifth-seeded WHS lost to fourth-seeded Mankato East 6-2 in the opening round, but came back to defeat Marshall 4-1 on Thursday. The Trojans advance to face New Ulm at 2 p.m. Saturday at Caswell Park in Mankato.
SACRED HEART -- Adrian took a 1-0 lead against Renville County West in a non-conference baseball game on Thursday. But the Jaguars scored three unanswered for a 3-1 victory. Lace Luettel, Nathan Rahe, Marshall Wagner and Noah Reyne each saw time on the mound for Adrian.
REDWOOD FALLS -- Three Worthington entries and two from Luverne will play in the Section 3A individual boys tennis semifinals by virtue of their performances Thursday in the first two rounds. Trojans Blaine Doeden and Sullivan Merrigan won two matches apiece in Redwood Falls, and teammates Kipton Jenson and Cade Lindner advanced in doubles competition. The Cardinals’ Matt Jelken (singles), along with Matt Sehr and Cole Stoltenberg (doubles) also moved on to semifinal play.
BUFFALO LAKE -- Nick Weg and Lucas Boever played well enough on Thursday to advance in Section 3AA golf competition. Competing on the first day of two days of play at the Oakdale Golf Course in Buffalo Lake, Weg carded an 84. Fellow senior Lucas Boever carded an 87 and will also advance to the Section 3AA finals Tuesday -- which will also be at Oakdale.
Randy Baker, one of the premier high school wrestling coaches in Minnesota during tenures at Lakefield, Heron Lake-Okabena, HL-O-L/Jackson and Jackson County Central, will be introduced as the new wrestling coach at Minnesota West Community and Technical College at 3:15 p.m. today (Thursday) in the commons area.
BUFFALO LAKE -- Three Worthington Trojan golfers advanced on the first day of the Section 3AA golf tournament on Wednesday, and the team was just one shot off advancing. The top five teams advance to the final day of the tournament Tuesday at the Oakdale Golf Course in Buffalo Lake. They were Minnewaska, Marshall, Fairmont, New Ulm and Litchfield. Worthington finished with sixth with a score of 379 strokes. It was the team's best score of the season, and it was only one stroke off of fifth place.
WORTHINGTON -- Wednesday was another cold, damp day in southwest Minnesota, but the high school golfers of Section 3A were able to get halfway through their tournament at GreatLIFE of Worthington. The top four teams and the top one-fourth of the rest qualified for the second and final day, which will happen again at GreatLIFE, next Wednesday.
The Worthington High School Trojans have been seeded sixth for the 2019 Section 2AAA baseball tournament. WHS will open at noon on Saturday in Mankato against third-seeded Mankato West. Mankato East is the top seed. Hutchinson is No. 2. Marshall is fourth, New Ulm fifth, Faribault seventh and Waseca eighth.
Luverne, Minneota top section baseball seeds Luverne and Minneota earned top status for the upcoming Section 3AA and Section 3A high school baseball tournaments. Luverne is the top seed in the 3AA South and Minneota is seeded No. 1 in 3A South. Action in both tournaments begin Saturday.
