What Education Secretary Betsy DeVos wants to do to school sexual misconduct rules is horrifying. What DeVos is proposing would allow accused students to cross-examine their accusers, would only allow colleges to be involved if the assault took place on campus, would make it harder to punish the accused and would narrow the definition of sexual harassment. Simply put, if DeVos gets her way, more people will get away with sexual assault.
FARGO -- They started more than 95 years ago…
FARGO — When I was growing up in Massachusetts, I regularly watched the Boston television newscasts. There was one news and sports reporter who really inspired me... His name was Clark Booth. He was a brilliant writer and storyteller. His stories were interesting, informative, clever and compelling. Booth died two weeks ago at the age of 79. Unbeknownst to him, he had an enormous influence on my career, even though I never met him.
It's been more than a month since I wrote a column on Mother's Day weekend about the tragic story of my mother -- And the feedback is still coming in. I wrote of the abuse she suffered from my father, the struggles of being a broke and divorced mother of three boys, her death from breast cancer at age 42, and my deep regrets. I have received hundreds of comments. Much more than from anything else I've ever written. It's also the most difficult thing I've ever written. I am much more comfortable writing about current events than of a painful time in my personal life.
It's Mother's Day weekend. Every year at this time I look at Facebook, and see hundreds of posts of people writing of the great times they had with their mothers... --And I'm envious. When I was a child, I lived in a nice house with my parents and two brothers. Inside that house was sadness. My father physically and verbally abused my mother. They constantly fought. There are few things as painful for a young child as listening to your parents continuously shout at each other. My father also frequently cheated on my mother.
Well, it's that time again... Time to respond to reader feedback. This time I'm going to start with responses to the critical emails and Facebook comments I receive. — From Don: "For some reason the world somehow needs irrelevant columnists." Dear Don, If I'm so irrelevant, why do you get so worked up over what I write about? — From Tony: "Nice burned bridge you have there." Dear Tony, Now you tell me. I didn't even realize we built a bridge.
When it comes to surveys...
It's time for a major change at the University of Minnesota... -- The name of "Coffman" should be dropped from the student union, now called Coffman Memorial Union. The U of M student government unanimously supported a resolution to rename the building. The matter is now in the hands of U of M President Eric Kaler.
